Maximise the opportunity of the Apprenticeship Levy to help bridge the skills gap in the Process Industry

Posted by Marketing on Tuesday 7th March 2017

The UK government is introducing the apprenticeship levy on 6 April 2017. The levy requires all employers operating in the UK, with a pay bill over £3 million each year, to invest in apprenticeships and training. The government is also greatly subsidising apprentice training schemes for SME’s to incentivise the uptake of apprentice positions.

The question is how can the process industry gain from the apprentice levy?

It’s a well-known fact that skills shortages are a major challenge currently facing the process industry. The challenge of an ageing workforce means that a huge number of jobs will need to be filled within the next ten years. Process industries find it increasingly difficult to recruit high level engineers and scientists. Companies need to secure a high calibre, skilled workforce to drive innovation.

A significant contribution to increased productivity can come from investment in skills of the workforce. Highly skilled people produce more high value goods and services with added efficiently. Research shows that at a company level, overall productivity gains associated with training were roughly twice as large as the wage incentives to employees. Another challenge here is to get effective and timely training without affecting current production.

Using dynamic simulators to train engineers and operators on real life DCS/ICSS graphics with realistic responses has been proven to greatly improve the training experience. Through our partners at multiple colleges and universities, TSC supply high fidelity dynamically accurate simulation models, that represent actual plant systems for both operator training and validation studies. These simulation models are being used as part of training schemes worldwide.

The benefits of having a dynamic simulator include:

  • Train operators without disturbing current production
  • Reduce your start-up/changeover time and costs with training before events.
  • Train on what-if scenarios including common start-up issues (pump failure, valve seizure, etc).
  • Ensure near 100% uptime of your operations and react quicker to changeover of product lines.
  • Demonstrate recovery from various upsets and malfunctions
  • Help manage your energy better through correct training and procedural changes.
  • Interface familiarisation
  • Emergency Response Training
