SIM 3340 Gas Turbine

The SIM 3340 turbine model simulates industry standard gas turbines used in small power plants.

About the sim

Model Description

The turbine harnesses the energy from the gas fuel supplied, as the gas undergoes a combustion process to generate high temperatures and pressures. Shaft work output is produced as the high temperature high pressure gas expands via the turbine exhaust. This in turn causes electricity to be generated.

The purpose of this model is to introduce the operating and control concepts relating to the use of a basic turbine system.

The system consists of a turbine which starts at full speed. The turbine is loaded using an electrical generator which is coupled to the shaft. The turbine is started using a coupled diesel engine.

The magnitude of fuel supplied to the turbine is based on the premises of a 4-way low select signal input cascaded onto the flow controller. The output from the generator is connected to a grid system via a field breaker this can be engaged or disengaged using the Engage Field Breaker switch button. There is a built in ESD (Emergency Shutdown) page, which serves as a platform to protect the process from inconvenient conditions.

The trend display shows the response of the system to any changes in operating conditions. A dedicated alarm window is available to output the series of triggered events as a result of unsuitable process conditions.
