SIM 5200 Tank Farm

Model Description 

The model consists of ten distinct areas, each designated for specific tasks related to the handling and storage of different process fluids, managing tank and bund drainage, and distributing inventory. These areas include: 

• Crude Oil 
• Fuel oil   
• Gas Oil 
• Kero & Aviation 
• Jetties & Ballast 
• Chemical Transfers 
• Roadcar Loading 
• LPG 
• Gasoline 
• Drain & Off-Spec 

Trainees will be required to identify and move various sequences of valves to correctly line up for operations including import, export and blending. They will monitor volumes of fluids transferred and levels in tanks, as well as achieve correct blending ratios. 

Understand Tank Farm Operations: 

• Identify the various types of chemicals and petrochemicals stored in tank farms. 
• Understand the processes of blending, separating, heating, and cooling chemicals in the environment. 
• Understand the import and export logistics involving cargo ships, road cars, and rail transportation. 
• Recognise the ten distinct areas within the model and their specific roles. 
• Detail the functions of each area, such as crude oil storage, fuel oil handling, and LPG management. 
• Illustrate the importance of proper drainage and off-spec handling in maintaining tank farm operations 

Operational Proficiency: 

• Demonstrate the ability to manage and control chemical transfers.
• Execute the loading and unloading procedures for roadcars and railcars efficiently. 
• Simulate the blending, heating, and cooling processes to meet desired chemical specifications. 

 Safety and Environmental Considerations: 

• Identify potential hazards associated with the storage and movement of chemicals and petrochemicals. 
• Apply safety protocols and emergency response procedures in simulated scenarios. 
• Discuss the environmental impact of tank farm operations and the measures taken to mitigate these effects. 

Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: 

• Analyse common operational issues within the tank farm and propose effective solutions. 
• Develop strategies for handling off-spec materials and managing drainage systems. 
• Utilise the simulation to practice responding to unexpected incidents and emergencies. 

Efficiency and Optimisation: 

• Evaluate methods to optimise the storage capacity and operational efficiency of the tank farm. 
• Implement best practices for inventory management and chemical processing. 
• Assess the effectiveness of different transport routes and loading techniques.
